Is your product recommended by ChatGPT?

4 min read

Ask ChatGPT what to buy in a category you also sell in. It names two or three shops. Yours is never one of them.

What changes when people buy through an assistant

More and more people, before buying, no longer search on Google and browse categories: they ask an AI assistant directly what's worth getting. The answer names a small number of products or shops — not a long list like a search page, just a few direct picks.

Why your shop stays out

The most common cause isn't technical: it's product descriptions written to sell, not to inform. Phrases like "the best for every occasion" don't say anything verifiable; an assistant needs concrete facts — material, size, who it's meant for, what sets it apart from a similar product.

What it takes for a product to be citable

Descriptions that answer real questions ("it's suitable for...", "it's made of...", "it's different because..."), not just adjectives. And, just like with local businesses, external confirmation helps: real reviews, mentions on other sites, not just your own word.

Having the product online isn't enough. The text around it needs to clearly say who it's for and why — what a customer would ask a salesperson, written on the page.

You don't need to rebuild the shop

You don't need to switch platforms or rebuild the site from scratch: often it's enough to rewrite the descriptions of your most-searched products, starting with the ones with the best margin or highest sales, instead of touching the whole catalog at once.

To understand how to find the words customers actually use, see keywords; for the general mechanism behind AI answers, see AI Search and LLMs.
