Your site isn't readable for the assistant
The simplest cause is also the most common: if your site has crawler and indexing problems, an AI assistant starts out just as disadvantaged as a classic search engine. It can't cite what it can't read.
Your site is readable, but it doesn't say the right things
Even a perfectly indexed site can stay invisible to assistants if it doesn't clearly state what you do, where, and for whom. An assistant doesn't "guess" — it needs direct sentences, not just a name and a logo, but text that explicitly says "seafood restaurant in Bologna" instead of leaving it to be inferred from a photo.
Nobody confirms what you say about yourself
An AI assistant tends to trust information more when it finds the same details confirmed elsewhere — reviews, mentions, other sites talking about you — not just on your own site. If you're the only source, the answer stays more cautious.
It's not that the assistant "doesn't know you". It's that it doesn't have enough clear signals to be confident recommending you instead of someone else.
What you can actually check
Three concrete things: state explicitly what you offer, where, and for whom (not just in the business name); keep information updated when hours, address or services change; and work toward getting others to talk about you — reviews, industry directories, mentions from customers.
It's never a guaranteed yes or no
AI assistants change over time how they choose what to cite, and no one can guarantee a mention. What you can do is remove the concrete obstacles — readability, clarity, external confirmation — and let the rest follow.
