The AI answer at the top of Google: what changes for your business

4 min read

Try searching for something on Google today: often, before any links, you'll already find a written answer — without having clicked on a single site.

What the AI answer at the top of Google is

For many searches, Google no longer shows just a list of links: a box with a written answer appears at the top, built by reading several sources at once. It's different from the old single-citation box: here the answer is recomposed, and it can name several sites together, or none in particular.

What changes for the person searching

Many searches end right there: the person finds the answer and doesn't click any link. For simpler searches — a schedule, a definition, a quick comparison — traffic to sites is declining, not because the sites are worth less, but because the question already has an answer before the click.

What changes for you

Ranking first on Google no longer always means being the first link on the list. Sometimes it means being one of the sources the AI names inside its answer. It's a different form of visibility — not a replacement for the classic one, but a new one.

Not every search gets an AI answer at the top: it happens more often for direct questions ("what", "how", "how much does it cost") than for very specific or local searches.

What it takes to be cited

The basics are the same as ever for SEO, but they matter even more: content written clearly, that actually answers the question instead of dancing around it, with a readable structure — headings, short paragraphs, lists. A site that explains one thing well is more likely to be the chosen source than one that only mentions it in passing.

This isn't the end of SEO

Searches with a more specific intent — someone looking for a product, a service, a business near them — are still the ones that actually bring in customers, and that's where a well-optimized site matters most. AI answers change the first part of the search journey, not everything else.
