How much does SEO cost, and what it depends on
Ask two different providers for an SEO quote and the numbers can be worlds apart. That doesn't mean one of them is scamming you: it means they're selling different things.
Why prices vary so much
It depends on how much work is actually needed: a small local site with few competitors needs far less than an online shop with hundreds of products in a crowded market. It also depends on who's doing the work — an agency with a dedicated team costs differently than a freelancer or an automated tool — and on how competitive your market is.
What you're actually paying for
You're rarely paying for "a result": you're paying for time and expertise (analysis, content, technical fixes), work that continues over time — because SEO isn't a one-time purchase, it needs upkeep — and, if the provider uses them, the tools it takes to do it well.
The most common pricing models
A one-time project, to fix specific problems; a monthly subscription, for ongoing work; hourly consulting; or a price tied to tools that handle the work automatically, with human support around it. No model is "the right one" in absolute terms — it depends on what you actually need.
Anyone promising a fixed price to "rank first on Google" is selling you something they can't control: no provider controls Google's algorithm, and anyone claiming otherwise deserves a second look.
What to expect from an honest price
A clear quote explains what's included, not just a total. Be wary of long lock-in contracts and exit penalties — if the work is actually delivering results, you shouldn't need an airtight contract to keep you around.
